The Strand
Make the most of Townsville’s tropical weather and seaside location by enjoying a relaxing stroll or bike ride along The Strand. Dotted along this 2.2km beachfront esplanade, you’ll find inviting cafes and bars, playgrounds and a water park the kids will love, a jetty to fish from, patrolled swimming beaches and so much more, all with fantastic views across the water to Magnetic Island.
Castle Hill Lookout
At 286 metres above sea level, Castle Hill dominates the Townsville skyline and unsurprisingly offers amazing 360-degree views of the city and surrounding area. If you have energy to burn, park at the base of the hill and walk to the summit. It only takes around 30 minutes each way but be prepared for a lot of stairs. If you want the view without the climb, you can drive up to the top instead.
Billabong Sanctuary
Less than half an hour’s drive south of BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Townsville, you’ll find Billabong Sanctuary, a native animal adventure the kids will go wild for. With wildlife talks and feeding shows, it’s a fun and educational day out for the whole family. Cuddle a koala or wombat, feed kangaroos and turtles and get up close and personal with snakes, lizards and even dingoes as roving rangers walk them through the sanctuary.
Street Art Walking Trail
If you’re an art lover, don’t miss Townville’s Street Art Walking Trail. It’s a self-guided walking tour with a twist as 12 of Townsville’s 27 street art murals offer an augmented reality experience that will surprise and delight all ages. Simply scan the QR code sticker located near the mural, then hold your phone up to the image and marvel as it comes to life.
Magnetic Island
No trip to Townsville is complete without a day trip to Magnetic Island. Just a 20-minute ferry ride from the city, this unspoilt paradise has something for everyone. From beaches to bushwalks, you can choose to snorkel the surrounding reef, go wildlife spotting for koalas and wallabies or even explore remnants of World War II fortifications on The Forts Walk.
