Australia boasts some of the best surfing in the world. With amazing beaches and awesome breaks spread all around our 34,000-kilometre coastline, we’re truly spoilt for choice.
To save you hours of research, we’ve come up with some surf trip itineraries along Australia’s East Coast that will get you amped up to catch some waves. And where better to kick off our Surf Series than Noosa to Byron Bay?
Noosa is one of only 10 officially designated World Surfing Reserves, so it should be on every keen surfer’s must-visit list. It’s home to five world-class point breaks as well as beach breaks that offer great surf in a variety of conditions. Surf schools offer beginner lessons all year round and you’ll find plenty of gentle waves to build your confidence. More experienced surfers should head into Noosa National Park where you’ll find three of those world-class point breaks, as well as Alexandria Bay (A-Bay) where you can reliably find surf even on the flattest of days.
Next stop on this surf safari, is the southern end of the Sunshine Coast. Drive the coast road and take your pick of the beach breaks from Castaways to Coolum along the way. Mooloolaba also has waves for all ability levels, from mellow rollers over a sandy bottom off Alexandra Headland and gentle beach breaks around Cotton Tree to larger waves and sucking tubes over rock reef at Point Cartwright and the Platform, which should only be attempted by more experienced surfers.
Heading further south, hit the highway to the Gold Coast. Here you’ll find the second World Surfing Reserve on this itinerary, covering the 16km-stretch from Burleigh Point down to Snapper Rocks on the NSW Border. Greenmount offers long, mellow waves that are gentle enough for beginners, while experienced surfers will love the man-made ‘Superbank’ that runs between Kirra Beach and Snapper Rocks. It draws surfers from around the globe and is also a regular leg of the Quicksilver Pro championship tour.
The chilled-out vibe of Byron Bay makes for the perfect end to a surfing road trip. A surf destination that lives up to its hype, Byron Bay has a beach to suit every wind direction. And, with no less than eight great surf spots within a 10-minute drive (or less) of our park you’ll want to head out early to make the most of every day. If you’re searching for big swells, consistent sets and long, peeling waves, try The Pass. It’s the best and busiest surf spot in the bay, and good for all levels too.
