A holiday in South West Rocks is all about enjoying the great outdoors and spending time in nature, but with so many amazing experiences on offer it’s almost impossible to fit them all into a single trip.
We spoke to the team at Ingenia Holidays South West Rocks to get a local’s point of view to ensure you make the most of your time and enjoy the best of the best.
Best breakfast/morning coffee
Back Creek Café, just a 10-15 minute walk from the park, ticks all the boxes: great food, great service and great views. It’s open from 6am seven days a week, so it’s perfect if you need a coffee to kick-start your day, plus, if you’ve walked up an appetite, they have a great breakfast menu, and the cakes are fabulous too!
Best photo opportunity
South West Rocks is one of the most picturesque towns on the New South Wales coast, so photo opportunities are all around, but the team’s top picks for a selfie are Horseshoe Beach taken from the headland or Smokey Cape Lighthouse for dramatic coastal views.
Best picnic spot
Little Bay is the perfect spot for a picnic and one of the area’s prettiest beaches. Set up on the sand or at one of the shaded picnic tables and keep your eyes open for the friendly kangaroos that can often be seen in the area.
Best local walks
Little Bay is also the start/end point of two of South West Rocks’ best walks. Head north along the Monument Hill track to Trial Bay Gaol (3km/1-hour round trip) or south to Smokey Cape Lighthouse (12km/3-hour round trip). Both weave their way through national parks and offer stunning coast views.
Best animal experience
While many people visit South West Rocks for the surfing, it’s also a really popular destination for scuba divers. In fact, Fish Rock is consistently listed among the top 10 dive sites in Australia. You’ll find sharks, turtles, rays and huge schools of fish all waiting for you just below the surface.
Best spot to watch the sun go down
Just a four-minute drive or a leisurely half-hour dog walk from the park, the pet-friendly Riverside Tavern has a large verandah overlooking the Macleay River. With sunsets to rival Bali, it is the perfect spot to sit and watch the sun dip down with a glass of wine or beer in hand or over a plate of food.
A hidden gem only locals know
South West Rocks is known for its beautiful beaches and great surf breaks, which draw people from all over. So where do the locals go to escape the crowds on the sand and in the water? According to the Ingenia Holidays South West Rocks team, Gap Beach. It’s a little out of the way and accessed via the Smoky Cape Track, which means it’s almost always quiet plus it has the best waves, just don’t tell anyone we told you!
